Legislator To Appear In Court Over Assault, Inflicting Injuries

Published

A member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Onyebuchi Offor, will on Friday, June 30, 2017, be docked in a court in the state for physically attacking two persons and causing them severe injuries.

Offor, a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and minority leader in the state legislature, is accused by the Area Commander of the Nigeria Police Force in Nnewi of seizing the mobile phones of Nnamdi Ibe and Kenechukwu Igweonu, both from Oraifite in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State, and savaging the two men when they protested.

But for the death of a serving High Court judge in Awka who was buried on June 28 which caused the whole judiciary in the state not to sit, Offor would have been docked today before Ijeoma J Arinze at Magistrate Court 2 in Ozubulu, headquarters of Ekwusigo LGA.

Our correspondent reported that Ibe and Igweonu were videoing Onyebuchi and his group in Oraifite on Saturday, May 20, 2017, as they were displaying posters (falsely) claiming that Humphrey Nsofor, an engineering consultant in Abuja and former Majority Leader in the Anambra State House of Assembly, had died the previous day in a ghastly motor accident in Kogi State the previous day.

“Igweonwu suffered a severe wound in the head while Ibe had swollen eyes following the severe beating”, said a police source who did not want his name in the press because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

Continued the source: “If not for the police intervention, both young men would have died. I must commend in particular Assistant Commissioner of Police Yusuf Kolo who saw that Onyebuchi and his group were behaving like possessed persons and quickly telephoned the Divisional Police Officer of Oraifite, Superintendent Alex Onwuka to send his men went to the residence of Honorable Nsofor to protect it from being burnt down”.

Kolo is the commander of the Inspector General of Police Special Tactical Squad (IGPSTS) in Abuja who is heading a five-man panel investigating several complaints by Oraifite people of serious human rights violations, including disappearances, against Emeka Offor, the elder brother of the state legislator and Nigeria’s most controversial government contractor ever.

The older Offor has fallen on hard times since Muhammadu Buhari became president, making him ditch the PDP for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Meanwhile, the legislator is about to be dragged to court by some of his kinsmen for perjury and certificate forgery.

They accuse him of claiming to be a graduate of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology “whereas he was a petty trader in Nnewi who did not go beyond the second year in a public secondary school”.

In a letter to the IGPSTS probing allegations of gross human rights abuses against Emeka Offor, Oraifite people claim that the legislator in cahoots with Chiedu Odumegwu, Chukwudi Obunike, Nnamdi Onwuanumba and Chimezie Okoye strangled Ifeanyi Okeke, a member of the All Progressives grand Alliance (APGA), for blocking them in Oraifite from writing fictitious results of the election into the state legislature in 2015.

It is understood that Chimezie Okoye, one of the persons accused of murder, was a member of a gang led by Olisa Ifedike alias Ofeakwu, the most notorious kidnapper in Anambra State, who was arrested in September, 2012.

It is widely alleged in Oraifite that Emeka Offor’s intervention saved Okeke from suffering the same fate as Ofeakwu.
