Leipzig resigns Timo Werner from Chelsea

Published

Timo Werner has made his return to RB Leipzig two years after his departure to Chelsea FC

The German made his way back to his homeland after failing to replicate the goalscoring form which prompted his move to Chelsea

Werner failed to impress at Stamford Bridge, where he only managed to score 23 goals in 89 appearances in all competitions.

He bid an emotional farewell to Chelsea FC and the fans with a letter posted on his Twitter page.

RB Leipzig made the announcement on their Twitter handle with a video captioned: “He’s back!”

Chelsea FC also confirmed his departure from Stamford Bridge on the club’s official Twitter handle with: “Thank you and good luck in Germany, Timo!”

In an interview quoted on RB Leipzig’s website, Werner said: “Now I’m looking forward to new season with RB Leipzig and above all to meeting the Leipzig fans again, who mean a great deal to me.”

The 26-year-old is currently RB Leipzig’s record top scorer, with 95 goals in 159 appearances for the club.

With this move, he intends to go on to regain his clinical goalscoring form and to earn a place in Hansi Flick’s Germany squad for the 2022 World Cup.

His transfer also coincidences with Chelsea coach, Thomas Tuchel’s desire to overhaul the Chelsea attack. Tuchel has made it clear that he is prepared to start all over again and will happily listen to offers for fellow Chelsea flop, Hakim Ziyech, and expressed his distrust in Christian Pulisic, whose contract expires in 2024.
