Lion kills teenage girl in Kenya

A lion has killed a 14-year-old girl in Kenya, according to the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).

The incident occurred on Saturday April 19, 2025, at a private ranch south of Nairobi National Park.

KWS confirmed the attack in a statement issued on Sunday April 20.

The girl had been walking with another teenager when the lion attacked.

The second girl witnessed the incident and immediately raised the alarm.

They traced a trail of blood leading to the Mbagathi River.

There, they recovered the girl’s body with injuries on her lower back.

Officials stated that the lion was not seen at the scene of the incident.

Response teams are also patrolling the region to prevent further attacks.

The agency said additional safety measures have been put in place.

The tragic death has sparked fresh concerns over human-wildlife conflict in Kenya.

Wild animals have increasingly strayed into human settlements near parks and reserves.

Experts blame the rising incidents on habitat encroachment and shrinking grazing space.

In a separate incident, an elephant killed a 54-year-old man in Nyeri County on Friday.

The victim had reportedly encountered the elephant near his farm.

KWS confirmed the fatal encounter and has launched an investigation.

Authorities say they are working to track the animal involved in the ugly attack.

Efforts continue to manage animal movement and protect both people and animals.
