Lionel Messi: My challenging PSG stint; how Inter Miami saved me

Lionel Messi recently discussed his difficult PSG stint and renewed energy since joining Inter Miami.

During an Apple Music interview, he reflected on his career, Paris struggles, and MLS ambitions.

Financial turmoil forced Barcelona to part with Messi in 2021, ending his two-decade legacy there.

He then joined PSG, but the two-year stay left him unfulfilled despite league titles.

“Those years weren’t enjoyable,” Messi admitted. “I struggled daily with training, matches, and adapting to everything.”

Though he earned accolades in Paris, his club performances fell short of his Barcelona heights.

The transition to a new environment and system seemed to take its toll on the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner.

In the summer of 2023, Messi made the decision to leave Europe behind and embark on a new chapter with Inter Miami, a club co-owned by former PSG and Manchester United midfielder David Beckham.

The move to MLS marked a fresh start for the 37-year-old, who has since experienced a remarkable resurgence both on and off the pitch.

I always had in my mind to play in MLS,” Messi revealed. “It attracted me, and it was something I wanted to do.

Coming to play for Inter Miami was an opportunity, and the way things developed during my last years in Paris made it a decision I had to make on the go.”

Since joining Inter Miami, Messi has been nothing short of sensational.

In just 42 appearances for the Florida-based club, he has scored 36 goals and provided 20 assists, showcasing the same brilliance that has defined his illustrious career.

Beyond his personal achievements, Messi has also played a pivotal role in elevating Inter Miami’s profile and performance.

“I liked the idea of coming and helping the club to become a greater club,” Messi said.

“It’s a club that’s growing, very new, with few years as a club. I knew it was a city that my family and I would enjoy.”

Messi’s arrival in MLS has transformed Inter Miami and brought unprecedented attention to the league overall.

Furthermore, the World Cup winner expresses optimism regarding MLS’s growth and its potential to become a global football powerhouse.

MLS has matured and keeps growing,” Messi stated.

“Furthermore, I hope growth continues, inspiring clubs like Inter Miami to drive progress, boosting the league’s global stature.”

He stressed MLS now faces a pivotal moment to showcase its evolution worldwide, urging teams to invest in talent and infrastructure for competitiveness.

Meanwhile, Messi’s MLS journey demonstrates his enduring football passion and adaptability, thrilling fans while marking a defining phase in the league’s quest for prominence.
