LP: Datti free to battle Obi for 2027 ticket

The Labour Party has declared that its 2027 presidential ticket is not reserved for any individual, including its 2023 candidate, Mr. Peter Obi.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the statement was made by the party’s National Secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, during a recent interview with Trust TV.

Ibrahim stated that no one has a monopoly on the presidential candidacy and emphasized that the race is open to all interested and qualified party members.

He noted that Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, who ran as Obi’s running mate in 2023, is equally qualified to seek the party’s ticket ahead of the next general election.

According to him, the Labour Party remains a democratic platform that operates on fairness, competition, and internal transparency.

The National Secretary rejected the perception that the presidential ticket should be treated as a position permanently reserved for one individual.

He explained that such assumptions run counter to the principles of democracy and inclusion upon which the Labour Party is founded.

Ibrahim stressed that if Datti Baba-Ahmed desires to contest, he is free to purchase the nomination form and compete during the party’s primary election.

He described the Labour Party as an institution that believes leadership should be earned and not inherited or assumed based on previous affiliations or past roles.

He reiterated that internal democracy remains the bedrock of the party’s credibility and public trust.

“All positions within the Labour Party, including the presidential ticket, must be contested and won,” he said.

Ibrahim made it clear that the process is open to all aspirants willing to follow due process, mobilize grassroots support, and face party delegates.

He insisted that commitment to due process will determine who eventually emerges as the flag bearer of the party.

“What is wrong with that?” he asked rhetorically.

“Datti is qualified to contest for the presidency as good as Peter Obi is,” he added.

“So the seat of that candidacy is not reserved for anybody,” Ibrahim declared.

He concluded that if Datti wishes to contest under the Labour Party, he should come forward, purchase the nomination form, and build his campaign from the ground up.

The Labour Party, he maintained, welcomes every aspirant who believes in democratic values and the party’s vision for Nigeria.
