Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has emphasized the urgent need to strengthen Nigeria’s economy to overcome challenges and ensure prosperity.

During the funeral service for his elder brother, Engr. Olufunmilayo Sunday Makinde, the governor highlighted fostering entrepreneurship and improving education.

Additionally, he stressed developing key infrastructure to lift the nation out of poverty.

Furthermore, Governor Makinde pointed out that despite Nigeria’s abundant natural resources, economic prosperity remains elusive.

He attributed this to a lack of strategic leadership and inadequate investment in human capital.

By comparing resource-rich Venezuela and Finland, which thrives through investment in education, Makinde reinforced that resources alone cannot free a nation from poverty.

He urged Nigerian leaders to prioritize managing resources while cultivating a skilled and educated workforce.

“Mineral resources are not enough to transform a nation,” Makinde stated.

He concluded that Finland’s human capital development provides a valuable lesson for Nigeria amid Venezuela’s struggles with its vast oil reserves.

For Nigeria to escape the poverty trap and achieve prosperity, we must invest in our younger generation and encourage entrepreneurship.”

Governor Makinde also highlighted his administration’s commitment to education as a cornerstone of development in Oyo State.

Since assuming office in 2019, his government has consistently allocated over 20 percent of the state’s budget to education, aligning with UNESCO’s recommendations for education funding.

Moreover, we aim to ensure that our people can weather any economic storm.”
