(DDM) – A tragic incident has shocked the residents of Olla community in Omala Local Government Area of Kogi State, as a young man identified as Yayu Musa has confessed to the brutal killing of his mother-in-law following a prolonged domestic disagreement over his marriage.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the 27-year-old suspect reportedly lured his mother-in-law, 50-year-old Atayi Abdul, to her farm on Friday, July 25, where he attacked her with a machete, leading to her death on the spot.
The suspect, who initially fled the scene of the crime, was later apprehended in a neighbouring village by members of a local vigilante group who tracked him down after receiving information about his whereabouts.
According to sources within the community, the suspect had been in a long-standing relationship with the deceased’s daughter, Umi Idris.
Musa claimed that he considered Umi his wife, having spent substantial resources to cater for her and seek solutions for her infertility issues.
However, the mother-in-law allegedly disapproved of the union due to the couple’s inability to conceive after several years of cohabitation.
Lawal Muhammed, a member of the deceased’s family, told reporters that the murder stemmed from the suspect’s frustration over the mother’s refusal to approve his marriage proposal to her daughter.
He said the situation became increasingly tense in recent months as the family of the woman pressured her to move on and consider other suitors.
During police interrogation, the suspect admitted to committing the murder, stating that his actions were driven by anger and emotional distress.
He claimed the late Atayi Abdul had persistently threatened to marry off her daughter to another man who could give her grandchildren, due to Umi’s inability to conceive under Musa’s care.
“I was angered into killing my mother-in-law because she wanted to deprive me of marrying her daughter,” Musa confessed.
He went further to narrate how deeply he loved Umi, explaining that he had invested all his savings into ensuring she got pregnant.
Musa said he sold his motorcycle and made several financial sacrifices in seeking medical solutions for his wife’s infertility.
“But in spite of everything I did, my mother-in-law never accepted me.
She said I wasn’t man enough and constantly told me she would give my wife to another man,” he stated.
Musa insisted that he considered Umi his wife, despite their relationship not being formally consummated through marriage rites.
He expressed bitterness over the thought of another man taking her from him, saying he could not bear the emotional pain of losing her while still alive.
The case has sparked outrage across the Olla community, with residents expressing shock over the violent outcome of what appeared to be a family dispute.
Many have condemned the act, describing it as a senseless and cruel response to rejection.
The Kogi State Police Command is expected to issue an official statement as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the murder.
Meanwhile, the suspect remains in custody and may soon face charges related to homicide and premeditated murder.
This incident adds to the growing number of domestic-related violence cases in Nigeria, particularly in rural communities where informal relationships often create deep-rooted tensions and unresolved conflicts.
As the family mourns the loss of their matriarch, community leaders are calling for increased awareness on conflict resolution and mental health support, especially among young men dealing with relationship pressures and societal expectations of fertility and masculinity.
