Manchester City are reportedly closing in on one of European football’s most exciting young midfielders, with Morocco international Ayoub Bouaddi said to have agreed personal terms with the Premier League champions.
The 18 year old Lille midfielder has reportedly given the green light to a move to the Etihad Stadium after discussions involving his representatives and family. Manchester City are now expected to continue negotiations with Lille as they look to complete the transfer.
Recent reports indicate that the two clubs are still working on the final details of the deal, meaning Bouaddi has not yet officially become a Manchester City player. However, an agreement over personal terms represents a major step forward in City’s pursuit of the highly rated midfielder.
Bouaddi’s story is particularly interesting because his rise to the top level has been remarkably quick. Born on October 2, 2007, in Senlis, France, to Moroccan parents, he grew up in Creil in northern France before joining Lille’s academy at the age of 14.
From the beginning, Bouaddi stood out not only because of his footballing ability but also because of his attitude towards education. FIFA reports that he completed his baccalaureate at just 16 and has also been studying mathematics at university level. He has even won a public speaking competition, giving him an unusual profile for a young professional footballer.
On the football pitch, his development has been just as remarkable.
Bouaddi progressed through Lille’s youth system before making his senior debut in October 2023. He was only 16 years and three days old when he played against KÍ Klaksvík in the UEFA Europa Conference League, becoming Lille’s youngest player to appear in an official match and one of the youngest players ever to feature in a European club competition.
His Ligue 1 debut followed later that month against Brest, when he was only 16 years and 20 days old.
Rather than being overwhelmed by senior football, Bouaddi gradually became an increasingly important player for Lille. His maturity, composure and technical ability attracted widespread attention, particularly after his memorable Champions League performance against Real Madrid.
On his 17th birthday in October 2024, Bouaddi started Lille’s Champions League match against Real Madrid. Lille went on to win 1–0, and the teenage midfielder earned praise for his calm display against a midfield containing established stars such as Jude Bellingham, Eduardo Camavinga and Aurélien Tchouaméni. Ligue 1 described his performance as one that announced him on the biggest stage.
Bouaddi’s playing style has also helped explain why some of Europe’s biggest clubs have become interested in him. He is primarily a central midfielder and is known for his composure on the ball, passing ability, awareness and willingness to make intelligent decisions under pressure.
His rise continued during the 2025/26 campaign, when he became a regular part of Lille’s midfield. According to Opta Analyst, he made 30 Ligue 1 appearances during the season and played more than 2,300 league minutes.
His international career has added another fascinating chapter to his story.
Although born and developed in France, Bouaddi is eligible to represent Morocco through his family background. He represented France at youth level before eventually choosing to play for the Atlas Lions.
That decision has already proved significant.
Bouaddi made his Morocco debut in 2026 and was subsequently selected for the country’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. At only 18, he entered the tournament as one of the youngest players in Morocco’s squad.
His World Cup debut against Brazil immediately introduced him to a global audience. FIFA highlighted his composed and fearless performance, while his display against Brazil’s midfield showed why he had become one of Morocco’s most exciting young players.
His emergence has now taken another major turn with Manchester City’s interest.
For City, Bouaddi represents the type of young talent the club can develop over the long term. His technical qualities and ability to operate in midfield make him an intriguing option for Pep Guardiola’s system, although competing for regular football at the Etihad would be a major challenge given the quality already available in City’s squad.
Bouaddi, however, is reportedly keen to join City as soon as possible rather than waiting until 2027, which had previously been discussed as a possible timeline for the move.
That preference could add urgency to negotiations between the two clubs.
Manchester City will now need to reach an agreement with Lille over the transfer fee and final conditions before the move can become official. Reports of personal terms being agreed should therefore be viewed as a significant development in the transfer process rather than confirmation that the deal has already been completed.
If the transfer is eventually completed, it would represent another extraordinary step in Bouaddi’s rapid rise from a young academy player in northern France to a full Morocco international and potential Manchester City player before his 19th birthday.
For a footballer who combined elite football development with academic achievements at an unusually young age, Bouaddi’s story is already remarkable.
Now, with Manchester City reportedly pushing to bring him to England, the next chapter of the Moroccan midfielder’s career could be about to begin.
