(DDM) – Former Zamfara Central Senator and ex-Tinubu campaign coordinator, Kabiru Marafa, has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of undermining opposition parties through covert political manoeuvres designed to weaken democratic competition before the 2027 general elections.
The outspoken politician made the allegations during a live interview on Channels Television on Monday, shortly after announcing his resignation from the ruling party.
DDM gathered that Marafa claimed APC operatives were deliberately fuelling internal crises within rival political platforms, creating instability to prevent them from building strong electoral strategies.
He described the alleged tactics as “political land mines” strategically planted to sabotage parties that could challenge APC’s grip on power in the next election cycle.
Marafa, who played a prominent role in President Bola Tinubu’s 2023 campaign machinery in Zamfara, revealed that he is currently weighing his options before committing to a new political base.
“I am consulting widely because I do not want to jump into another party only to see the same issues replicated,” Marafa stated, warning that unchecked political manipulation could erode Nigeria’s democratic foundations.
Analysts say his departure represents a growing sign of internal discontent within APC, especially among loyalists who believe promises of reform and inclusivity have not materialised since the last election.
Political observers further note that Marafa’s allegations may intensify scrutiny of APC’s pre-election strategies, particularly as opposition groups accuse the ruling party of exploiting state resources to consolidate power.
“Sabotaging internal democracy is dangerous for Nigeria’s political future,” said a political commentator in Abuja.
“If opposition parties are destabilised from within, it reduces healthy competition and leaves voters with limited choices.”
Marafa’s claims have sparked debate among political analysts and party stakeholders, with some describing his move as a potential game-changer for opposition mobilisation in the North-West region.
Others believe his defection could embolden more aggrieved APC members to speak out ahead of 2027, potentially altering power dynamics in key battleground states.
As of press time, APC leadership has yet to issue an official response to Marafa’s allegations.
However, insiders suggest the party may attempt to downplay his comments to prevent further political fallout.
Observers say the weeks ahead will determine whether Marafa’s accusations trigger broader defections or prompt internal reforms within the ruling party as Nigeria edges closer to another fiercely contested election season.
