Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN), Kano State, has ordered the immediate closure of two off-campus female hostels, following allegations of immoral behaviour and other concerns.

The hostels — Al-Ansar Indabo, located on UDB Road and another in Hotoro — were previously approved by the institution as official accommodation for female students.

However, the school has now withdrawn that approval.

In a statement issued by the Vice President of Campus Life, Dr. Hamza Garba, the university cited reports of inappropriate behavior, inadequate water and electricity supply, student unrest, and unauthorised late-night outings as reasons for the decision.

“I am directed by the management to inform our esteemed parents and students that the university has withdrawn its approval for Al-Ansar Indabo female hostels,” the statement reads.

Meanwhile, the students residing in the affected hostels have been ordered to vacate the premises immediately after their first semester examinations.

The university also warned that it would not take responsibility for any consequences resulting from failure to comply to the order.

The institution said it is collaborating with security agencies to ensure the directive is enforced.

While the official reason points to misconduct, some students believe the closures may have more to do with poor living conditions.

“Whatever misconduct happened must have occurred outside,” one student argued. Another suggested the shutdown is more related to inadequate amenities than any behavioural issues.

The affected hostels reportedly house around 500 female students, many from outside Kano.

Some students confirmed plans are underway to move them to newly constructed hostels closer to campus, one of which has been named in honour of a late student.

MAAUN currently lacks on-campus accommodation and depends on partnerships with private developers to provide student housing.
