MAUTECH Riot: Varsity sets up committee to investigate crisis

The authorities of Modibbo Adama University of Technology (MAUTECH) Yola have constituted a 10 man committee to investigate Sunday religious riot in the school that led to the dead of a student.

 

The riot was caused by alleged blasphemous post again Islam Prophet Muhammadu on a group WhatsApp by an engineering students.

 

The committee has Prof. Bashir Aliyu as chairman while Mr Hamman Aminu would serve as Secretary.

 

Other members included  Prof. Justice Onu, Prof. Jafaru Ali, Prof. Aisha Mubi, Dr Iliyasu Thuku, Dr Ezra Enock, Dr Ibrahim Bakari, Dr Magaret Nadro and Mr Gambo Matudi.

The committee which has four weeks to submit its report is to investigate cause of conflicts, identify major drama personae, cost of damages to university and recommend disciplinary action and measures to curtail future occurrence.

 

Meanwhile, students of the university have called for the speedy reopening of the university which was closed indefinitely following the riot.

 

A statement signed by the university Student Union Government (SUG) President, Haliru Amos, and the Zone C Coordinator of National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS), Usman Umar condemned the incident and called for tolerance.

“We urged the management and relevant stakeholders as a matter of urgency facilitate speedy reopening of the university…

 

“We sincerely condemn the recent happenings in MAUTECH which led to the closure of the university and call on our students to respect each other’s faith and belief. We cannot be the said leaders of tomorrow when we can’t each other today.”

 

The statement showed appreciation to role played by the university management and security agencies in handling the crisis.
