France underlined their status as one of the favourites to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a commanding 3–0 victory over Sweden in an entertaining Round of 32 contest at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Inspired by captain Kylian Mbappe, who scored twice, and a composed finish from Bradley Barcola, Didier Deschamps’ side produced a polished display to book a place in the Round of 16, where they will face Paraguay.
Playing in front of more than 80,000 passionate supporters, Les Bleus dominated large spells of the contest with their trademark blend of technical quality, attacking pace and tactical discipline. Sweden arrived determined to frustrate one of the tournament favourites, but France’s relentless pressure eventually proved too much for the Scandinavian side.
The French started brightly from the opening whistle, controlling possession and forcing Sweden deep inside their own half. Midfielders Aurélien Tchouaméni and Eduardo Camavinga dictated the tempo, while Michael Olise and Ousmane Dembele stretched the Swedish defence with constant movement and intelligent runs down both flanks.
France created the first clear opportunity inside the opening 10 minutes when Dembele delivered a dangerous low cross into the penalty area, but Barcola’s first time effort drifted narrowly wide of the post.
Sweden responded with a quick counterattack led by Alexander Isak, whose pace briefly unsettled the French defence. The Newcastle United striker combined well with Viktor Gyokeres, but goalkeeper Mike Maignan reacted sharply to deny Sweden an early breakthrough.
As the first half progressed, France tightened their grip on proceedings. William Saliba and Dayot Upamecano comfortably dealt with Sweden’s aerial threat, while Jules Kounde frequently joined the attack to provide additional width on the right.
Michael Olise emerged as France’s chief creator, repeatedly finding pockets of space between Sweden’s midfield and defence. His vision and precise passing caused constant problems, and it was only a matter of time before France converted their dominance into goals.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 45th minute.
Olise collected possession on the edge of the penalty area before slipping a perfectly weighted pass to Ousmane Dembele, whose clever first touch released Kylian Mbappe inside the box. The French captain produced a brilliant step over to wrong foot his marker before calmly placing his shot beyond the advancing Swedish goalkeeper to give France a deserved 1–0 lead just before halftime.
The goal lifted the atmosphere inside the stadium and rewarded France for an outstanding first half performance.
Sweden attempted to regroup after the interval, but France returned with even greater intensity.
Only eight minutes into the second half, Les Bleus doubled their advantage.
In the 53rd minute, Olise once again demonstrated his creative brilliance by threading an exquisite through ball into the path of Bradley Barcola. The Paris Saint-Germain forward timed his run to perfection before calmly slotting the ball past the goalkeeper to make it 2–0.
The goal further highlighted France’s attacking quality and left Sweden facing an uphill battle.
Coach Jon Dahl Tomasson introduced fresh attacking players in an attempt to revive his side’s hopes, but the changes only created more space for France’s dangerous front line.
Mbappe, Dembele and Olise continued to combine effortlessly, producing wave after wave of attacks that kept Sweden pinned inside their own defensive third.
France came close to adding a third when Dembele’s curling effort forced an excellent save, while Barcola narrowly missed connecting with another dangerous cross delivered by Theo Hernandez.
Sweden’s best opportunity arrived shortly after the hour mark when Isak escaped his marker and fired a low shot toward the bottom corner, only for Maignan to produce another outstanding save.
The decisive moment arrived in the 74th minute.
Following another swift French counterattack, Michael Olise split Sweden’s defence with a perfectly timed pass that released Mbappe behind the back line. Showing the composure expected of one of the world’s finest forwards, the Real Madrid star calmly rounded the goalkeeper before guiding the ball into the empty net to complete his brace and extend France’s lead to 3–0.
The goal also saw Mbappe draw level with Lionel Messi as one of the tournament’s leading scorers with six goals, further strengthening his credentials in the race for the Golden Boot.
France refused to ease off despite holding a comfortable advantage.
Olise nearly produced one of the goals of the tournament with a spectacular overhead kick that crashed against the crossbar, while substitute Randal Kolo Muani also came close after forcing another fine save from Sweden’s goalkeeper.
By the final whistle, France had completely outclassed their opponents.
Les Bleus dominated possession, controlled midfield, defended with authority and displayed the attacking fluency expected from genuine title contenders. Sweden fought bravely throughout the contest but struggled to cope with France’s pace, movement and technical superiority.
The victory sends Didier Deschamps’ men into the Round of 16 full of confidence ahead of a challenging meeting with Paraguay, who eliminated Germany in one of the tournament’s biggest surprises.
With Mbappe in outstanding form, Olise orchestrating attacks with remarkable creativity and Barcola continuing to impress in front of goal, France appear to be gathering momentum at precisely the right stage of the competition.
If this commanding performance is any indication, Les Bleus remain firmly on course to challenge for another FIFA World Cup crown and reinforce their reputation as one of international football’s greatest powers.
