Meet the new NBA President—Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, SAN

Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, SAN, contested and won the position of the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and is currently the president-elect of the Association.

He is the Principal Partner at Y. C. Maikyau & Company Chambers.

He graduated from Ahmadu Bello University in 1989.

He later attended the Nigerian Law School between 1989 to 1990 and was admitted as Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in December, 1990.

Maikyau began his carrier in Private Law practice with the Law firm of Danladi Bamaiyi and Company, where he rose to become the Head of Chambers.

He resigned on the 6th of August, 2003 to continue practice under the name of Y. C Maikyau and Company, with offices in Abuja and Sokoto, Nigeria.

On 7th of July 2011, he was conferred with the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), by the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee and sworn in on the 26th of August, 2011.

He obtained Diploma in International Commercial Arbitration, in June 2014 from the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, London, United Kingdom and presently a Fellow of the Institute.

Reacting to the victory as the 31st President of the Asssociation on his Twitter handle, Maikyau, SAN, thanked all members of the Bar that voted for him and pledged to fulfill his promises prior to the election.

Tweeting, he said: “I couldn’t have done it without you!

“I am grateful to the membership of the Nigerian Bar Association for entrusting me with the mandate to lead the Bar for the next two years.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as the 31st President of the NBA.”

He also congratulated other Executive Committee Members – Elect of the NBA, hoping that with God’s divine wisdom, they will take the Nigerian Bar forward during our tenure.

  • As the current Chairman, NBA Welfare Committee, I have been able to work with the President to set in motion welfare schemes. Going forward, I plan to develop more schemes while enhancing the current schemes to encourage and promote healthier attitude and lifestyle of Lawyers.
  • A handful of Lawyers in Nigeria suffer from different health challenges. If given the opportunity, my administration will ensure that Lawyers benefit from Medical outreach free of charge.
  • We will continue with the current policy of issuance of free Stamp & Seal and seek to improve all aspects of administration in that regard.
  • We will implement policies that will be beneficial towards improving and sustaining the welfare of our learned colleagues.
  • We will focus on professional capacity development of our colleagues through Continuing Legal Education, and also reinforce the Career Development Centre to provide career-related guidance and assistance to members.
  • We aim to improve NBA welfare policies, protect Lawyers’ business as well as establish NBA Employment Bureau that will assist in seeking job placements for our colleagues.
  • We will seek to improve on every aspect of the current administration by ensuring that our colleagues have access to credit, medical consultation through technological means and a better Life Assurance Policy.

The Nigerian Bar Association is a non-profit, umbrella professional association of all lawyers admitted to the bar in Nigeria founded in 1933.

It is engaged in the promotion and protection of human rights, the rule of law and good governance in Nigeria.

It has its current President in the person of Olumide Akpata.

The motto of the Association is to promote the rule of law and the purpose is to promote legal professionalism in the country.
