Memphis Depay has publicly accused Brazilian giants Corinthians of backing out of an agreement to extend his contract, leaving the Dutch forward frustrated after what appeared to be weeks of negotiations over his future.
The dispute emerged after Corinthians confirmed that the club would not proceed with a new contract for the 32 year old attacker. The decision brought an unexpected end to negotiations that had previously appeared to be heading toward an agreement for Depay to remain in Brazil for at least two more seasons.
Depay responded strongly to the development, claiming that an agreement had already been reached between his representatives and several departments within Corinthians. According to the Netherlands international, the proposed renewal had received approval from the club’s president as well as its sporting, legal and financial departments before some individuals subsequently decided not to honour the arrangement.
The forward expressed his disappointment on social media and made it clear that he intends to defend his interests over the dispute. Depay said he had respected Corinthians throughout the process but described the decision as unacceptable and indicated that he would provide more information about the situation in the coming days.
Corinthians, however, have presented a different explanation for the breakdown. The Brazilian club said financial considerations were behind its decision not to renew Depay’s contract, stressing that taking on another commitment of such magnitude would not be compatible with the financial balance required to maintain the institution’s sustainability.
The disagreement comes against the backdrop of significant financial pressure at Corinthians. Reports from Brazilian football media indicate that the club owes Depay a substantial amount connected to his existing agreement, with estimates placing the outstanding figure at around 42 million Brazilian reais, approximately $8 million, before interest.
That financial issue had been an important part of the renewal negotiations. Earlier discussions reportedly involved restructuring the player’s remuneration, reducing his fixed salary and arranging for the outstanding debt to be paid in instalments. The proposed agreement was also expected to run for two additional seasons, potentially keeping Depay at Corinthians until 2028.
The collapse of the negotiations therefore represents a dramatic reversal. Only recently, reports suggested that the two sides were close to finalising a new agreement, with lawyers exchanging contract drafts and discussions progressing over the structure of the deal.
Depay joined Corinthians in September 2024 after leaving Atlético Madrid and quickly became one of the club’s most important attacking players. His arrival was considered a major coup for Brazilian football, given his experience with some of Europe’s biggest clubs and his status as a Netherlands international.
During his time in São Paulo, Depay contributed 20 goals in 79 appearances across competitions. He also helped Corinthians enjoy a successful period on the pitch, winning the Campeonato Paulista and Copa do Brasil in 2025 before adding the Supercopa Rei in 2026.
Before moving to Brazil, Depay had built an impressive European career. He began with PSV Eindhoven before earning a move to Manchester United in 2015. He later revived his career at Lyon, where his performances attracted attention from Barcelona, leading to a move to the Spanish giants in 2021.
After leaving Barcelona, Depay joined Atlético Madrid before making the surprising decision to continue his career in Brazil with Corinthians. His move proved successful on the field, allowing him to become an influential figure for the club while also experiencing South American football for the first time.
His departure now leaves Corinthians facing the task of managing both the sporting and financial consequences of the decision.
Club president Osmar Stabile is expected to address the situation publicly and provide further clarification about why the renewal collapsed. Corinthians have maintained that the decision was necessary because of the club’s financial circumstances, while Depay’s comments suggest that he believes the situation involves more than simply financial considerations.
For Depay, the immediate priority will be determining his next step after leaving Corinthians. With his experience in the Premier League, La Liga, Ligue 1 and Brazilian football, the Dutch forward remains an experienced attacking option despite being 32.
The situation also demonstrates how quickly football transfer negotiations can change. What appeared to be a near completed renewal has instead developed into a public dispute between an established international player and one of Brazil’s biggest clubs.
