Former Premier League referee Mike Dean has backed the decision to show Nigerian defender Ola Aina a yellow card rather than a red during Nottingham Forest’s 1-0 defeat to Leeds United, insisting the challenge on James Justin did not warrant a sending off.
The controversial incident occurred in the 18th minute of Saturday’s Premier League encounter at the City Ground, when Aina lunged into a challenge on Leeds defender Justin.
The Forest right-back missed the ball and made contact with Justin with his trailing leg, leaving the Leeds player on the ground and prompting immediate concerns that Aina could be dismissed.
