Port Harcourt is set to become the centre of Nigerian basketball once again as the Rivers State capital hosts the 2026 Nigeria Premier Basketball League playoffs for the fourth consecutive year.
The decisive Phase Three of the competition will take place at the Basketball Stadium on Niger Street, Port Harcourt Township, following a revised schedule announced by the League Management Committee of the Nigeria Basketball Federation.
The playoffs were initially scheduled to run from August 22 to 29, but the dates have now been adjusted. The participating teams are expected to arrive in Port Harcourt on August 29 for pre tournament technical meetings, while competitive action will begin on August 30 and continue until September 5. The teams are scheduled to depart the following day.
The tournament will bring together eight teams that successfully qualified from the Atlantic and Savannah Conferences. The Atlantic Conference will be represented by Rivers Hoopers, Maktown Flyers, Hoops & Read and Lagos Raptors, while Aso Sky Hawks, 313 Warriors, Gboko City Chiefs and Kano Pillars will fly the flag for the Savannah Conference.
The teams will compete in a round robin format, with every game expected to carry significant importance as the contenders battle for a place at the top of the standings and ultimately the 2026 NPBL championship.
For the host city, the tournament represents another opportunity to showcase its strong connection with basketball. Port Harcourt has become a familiar destination for the league’s biggest games, having hosted the playoffs for the past three years.
The continued selection of the city also provides a major boost for basketball supporters in Rivers State, who will have the opportunity to watch some of the country’s best domestic players compete on home soil.
Rivers Hoopers will naturally attract much of the attention. The Port Harcourt based club enters the competition with strong ambitions of reclaiming the national crown and will have the advantage of playing in familiar surroundings.
The KingsMen have enjoyed an impressive run through the earlier phases of the 2026 season. They recorded a 4 1 record in Phase One before following it up with a 6 1 record in Phase Two, underlining their consistency and competitiveness.
Rivers Hoopers are also preparing aggressively for the decisive stage of the season. The club recently strengthened its squad by signing experienced Tunisian point guard Omar Abada as it looks to go one step further after narrowly missing out on last season’s championship.
The arrival of Abada adds another layer of experience to a team already determined to challenge for the title. The Tunisian has represented his country at major international competitions and was part of the Tunisia teams that won the FIBA AfroBasket championship in 2017 and 2021.
His experience could prove valuable in a tournament where pressure, consistency and tactical discipline will be crucial.
However, Rivers Hoopers cannot afford to underestimate their opponents.
Maktown Flyers arrive with championship pedigree after winning the 2025 NPBL title, while the other Atlantic Conference qualifiers, Hoops & Read and Lagos Raptors, will be determined to upset the established order.
The Savannah Conference teams will also have plenty to prove. Aso Sky Hawks, 313 Warriors, Gboko City Chiefs and Kano Pillars have all earned their places among the country’s leading teams after progressing through the earlier stages.
Their presence ensures that the playoffs will not simply be a contest between the traditional favourites. Every team will have an opportunity to challenge for the championship, making the round robin format particularly important.
For the coaches, managing player fitness and maintaining consistency throughout the tournament could be just as important as individual talent.
The Basketball Stadium on Niger Street is also expected to attract a strong crowd throughout the tournament. Basketball has continued to gain popularity in Nigeria, and the presence of the country’s leading domestic clubs should provide supporters with plenty of high quality action.
