Missile attack: We will help Israel deal with Iran — US

The United States Government warned Tuesday that there would be “severe consequences” for Iran after its missile attack against Israel, pledging to work with Jewish nation to extract a price from Tehran.

Recall that Washington offered similar support for Israel after helping it thwart Iran’s previous attack in April, but then it quickly turned to caution Israel against responding too broadly, fearing an escalation into a regional war.

On Tuesday, though, Biden officials weren’t just stressing Israel’s right to respond but indicating that the US would be helping them in launching that response.

“There will be severe consequences for this attack and we will work with Israel to make that case,” Sullivan said during a press briefing at the White House hours after Iran launched some 180 ballistic missiles at Israel.

Israel sends more troops into Lebanon and vows Iran will pay for missile attack.

Meanwhile, Israel’s military said Wednesday it was sending new ground forces into southern Lebanon, as Iran warned the U.S. and its ally against retaliation for its ballistic missile attack.

Israel vowed Iran “will pay” for its attack, while Tehran urged the U.S. to “step aside” and warned any retaliation will be met with “an even tougher response,” as fears grew of all-out war in the Middle East.

Many of the nearly 200 ballistic missiles were intercepted by U.S. forces but one Palestinian was killed in the occupied West Bank and damage was reported at a school in central Israel.

The Israeli military said that infantry and armored units would join its invasion of southern Lebanon targeting Hezbollah.

Hezbollah said this morning that it had repelled Israeli forces from a Lebanese border town, as both sides reported the first ground clashes.

Israel conducted new strikes overnight on the Lebanese capital, Beirut, after weeks of intense aerial bombardment that Lebanese officials say has killed more than 1,000 people and displaced around 1 million.
