Real Madrid manager José Mourinho has questioned the timing of the announcement of Vinicius Jr.’s four-match La Liga suspension, arguing that the decision should not have been made public just hours before the Spanish club’s crucial UEFA Champions League encounter against AS Roma.
The Brazilian forward learned of the suspension approximately two hours before Wednesday’s European fixture in Rome, raising concerns about whether the timing could affect his concentration ahead of an important match.
Mourinho directed his criticism at the Spanish football authorities responsible for communicating the disciplinary decision, questioning why the announcement could not have been made earlier in the day or postponed until after the Champions League encounter.
Speaking before the match, the Portuguese coach said the relevant committee should explain why the punishment was announced so close to kick-off.
“Ask the Spanish Refereeing Committee why they published the news about Vini’s ban minutes before he plays an important UCL game,” Mourinho said.
“Real Madrid is a Spanish club, so why publish it now?”
The manager’s comments reflected his concern that the timing of the announcement could place unnecessary pressure on a player preparing for a major European fixture. His objection centred on when the decision became public rather than a detailed challenge to the disciplinary ruling itself.
Vinicius was handed the four-match suspension following an incident involving a hair pull on Villarreal defender William Saliba during a previous La Liga fixture. The punishment is expected to keep the forward out of several domestic matches, including the highly anticipated El Clásico against Barcelona.
The other fixtures he is expected to miss are against Sevilla, Racing Santander and Valencia, although the final schedule remains subject to the applicable disciplinary process.
The potential absence of Vinicius represents a significant concern for Real Madrid, given his importance to the team’s attacking play. The Brazilian is known for his pace, dribbling ability and capacity to create scoring opportunities, making him an influential figure in matches against domestic rivals.
His expected absence from El Clásico could be particularly significant, with Barcelona and Real Madrid preparing for one of the most closely watched encounters in Spanish football.
Mourinho’s criticism also highlighted the difficulty of managing players’ emotions when important disciplinary news arrives shortly before a match. Although professional footballers are expected to remain focused under pressure, the manager questioned whether the announcement could have been handled at a more appropriate time.
The controversy unfolded as Real Madrid prepared to face Roma in the Champions League, a competition in which every match carries considerable importance for clubs seeking to advance to the next stage.
Despite the distraction surrounding Vinicius, Real Madrid produced a dramatic comeback to defeat Roma 4-3 after trailing 3-1. Late goals from Carlos Espí, Endrick and Antonio Rüdiger helped the Spanish side secure victory in an encounter that appeared to be slipping away from them.
The result provided a positive outcome for Mourinho and his players, but the timing of Vinicius’ suspension remained a major talking point after the match.
Mourinho later reiterated his concerns, describing the announcement as disrespectful to a Spanish club preparing for an important European fixture. He questioned why the authorities could not have released the decision the following morning instead of making it public shortly before the game.
The coach also acknowledged that Vinicius faced difficult circumstances during the match against Roma, while taking responsibility for some of the tactical challenges the forward encountered during the first half.
For Real Madrid, attention will now turn to managing the consequences of the suspension while maintaining their competitiveness across domestic and European competitions.
The disciplinary decision means the club may have to adjust its attacking options for several important La Liga fixtures. Vinicius’ potential absence against Barcelona, in particular, could force Mourinho to consider alternative combinations as Real Madrid navigate a demanding period of the season.
However, the wider debate surrounding the case is likely to continue, with questions remaining about the timing of disciplinary announcements and how football authorities communicate decisions involving players ahead of major matches.
