Naomi Osaka’s Grandfather Once Rejected Her Mother’s Relationship With Black Man Before Family Reconciliation

Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka’s family history includes a difficult chapter involving racial prejudice, family rejection and eventual reconciliation, after her maternal grandfather initially opposed her mother’s relationship with a Haitian man.

Osaka’s mother, Tamaki Osaka, was reportedly rejected by her family after her father discovered that she was romantically involved with Leonard François, a Black man from Haiti who was studying in the United States when they met in Japan.

According to accounts of the family’s history, Tamaki’s father strongly disapproved of the relationship and accused her of bringing shame upon the family for dating a foreigner of African descent.

The couple had reportedly kept their relationship private for some time before the disagreement became known within the family. When Tamaki’s father discovered the relationship, tensions escalated, particularly as he had other expectations for his daughter’s future, including the possibility of an arranged marriage.

Rather than abandon Leonard, Tamaki chose to remain with him. The couple eventually moved to Osaka, Japan, where they began building a life together. Their daughters, Mari and Naomi, were born during their time there.

The family later relocated to the United States, settling initially on Long Island, New York, when Naomi was about three years old. The move brought them closer to Leonard’s family and provided a new environment in which to raise their daughters.

For years, Tamaki reportedly had little contact with her Japanese relatives following the disagreement. Her father’s disapproval also meant that Naomi and her older sister grew up without the same level of connection to their maternal grandparents that many children experience.

However, the family relationship eventually improved. According to published accounts, Tamaki reconnected with her family in 2008, years before Naomi achieved international fame.

Naomi’s rise in tennis subsequently brought even greater attention to the family’s story. She became one of the sport’s biggest stars after defeating Serena Williams in the 2018 US Open final, becoming the first Japanese player to win a Grand Slam singles title.

Her success also made her a prominent figure representing both her Japanese and Haitian heritage. Although she competes internationally for Japan, Osaka has repeatedly acknowledged the influence of both cultures on her upbringing.

Her father played an important role in developing her tennis career, drawing inspiration from the Williams sisters and their father, Richard Williams. He began training Naomi and Mari when they were young, despite having limited professional tennis experience himself.

The family’s journey has since become part of the wider story behind Osaka’s rise, highlighting the personal sacrifices made by her parents before their daughter became an internationally recognised athlete.

While her grandfather’s initial opposition to the relationship has been widely documented, the suggestion that he only returned to reconnect after Naomi became famous is inaccurate. Reports indicate that the reconciliation began around 2008, approximately a decade before her breakthrough Grand Slam victory.

The story remains a striking account of how a relationship once rejected by a family eventually became part of the background of one of the world’s most recognisable tennis champions.
