Navy hands impounded oil vessels over to NSCDC for prosecution

The Commandant General of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Abdullahi Gana Muhammadu has said that  impounded five vessels used for illegal oil bunkering by the Nigerian Navy have been handed over to the Corps for necessary legal action as the lead Agency in-charge of Protection of Critical Infrastructure and National Assets in Nigeria. 

Gana made this disclosure when he received the Commander Naval Unit, Commodore Ngolmo Poyilma Aliyu in his office at the Corps National Headquarters, Abuja. 

The NSCDC boss acknowledged the existing collaborations and enviable synergy between the Corps and the Nigerian Navy, especially in the fight against illegal bunkering, oil theft and vandalism. 

He said that “the Navy as one of the stakeholders has arrested suspects and impounded their vessels and ship which have always being  handed over to the Corps for investigation and prosecution in line with our mandate.” 

Abdullahi Gana also said that the Corps which is in charge of the registration, regulation, monitoring of the Private Guards industry,  is working towards ensuring that criminal elements are not recruited as private guards. 

He further disclosed that he is poised to transform the private guard industry to an enviable position that could attract qualified  and able Nigerians into the profession. 

According to him, “this is to ensure that as the Third Tier of Security, the Private Guards companies play complementary role to the regular Security Agencies of Government in line with the UN Charter which which emphasises the need for one policeman to 400 people for effective policing of the society.”

In the area of Disaster Management, he said the Corps as one of the critical stakeholder have put in place lots of mechanism for timely intervention during emergency situations, rescue operations, early warning alert signal and mitigation. 

Commodore Ngolmo Poyilma Aliyu responding said his visit is to call for synergy and collaboration in fighting crime within the Federal Capital Territory and environs. Aliyu asserted that the Nigerian Navy is one of the organization that believe in synergy and respects the function of other Agencies of Government.  

He pointed out that, instead of unhealthy rivalry, partnership in fighting crime is more desirable. 

Ngolmo stated that, considering the role of the Corps in the Protection of Critical Infrastructure and National Assets, he posited that the Corps has performed creditability well, in this vein, he appealed for collaboration in tackling the hydra headed crime, as well as fighting insurgency. 

He called on all Agencies to see each other as one considering the fact that, all are creation of the Federal Government established to fight a common cause. 

The blissful Commandant General while appreciating the August visitors assured them of the Corps continuous relationship, using the occasion to call on the Nigerian Navy to keep assisting the NSCDC to grow.
