An officer of the Nigerian Navy has shot and killed a fellow military colleague in Zamfara State on Friday.
The sad development was confirmed in a statement by Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba.
He said the incident involved an officer identified as L.S. Akila A., who was deployed at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Dansadua as part of Operation FANSAN YAMMA.
The shooting occurred under questionable circumstances when Akila reportedly opened fire sporadically, resulting in the death of his colleague.
Meanwhile, following the incident, he was disarmed, arrested, and detained for further investigation.
Maj. Gen. Buba confirmed that an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting is currently underway.
He said, “After investigation, the case will be escalated to a standing court martial set-up to address such misdemeanor among troops.”
General Buba stated that administrative procedure for notifying the family of the deceased was ongoing.
“It is for this reason, his name is not yet released to the public. Nevertheless, the name will be released in due course,” he said
