Navy raid brothels in Rivers, rescue 50 girls ‘forced into prostitution’
Operatives of the Nigerian Navy (NN) have raided two brothels, Royal Hotel and Cool Breeze Hotel, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and rescued some fifty girls who were reportedly prostitutes.
According to the reporter, Mr. Deji Adesogan, the rescued girls claimed they were ‘forced into prostitution’ though the report did not indicate who forced them.
Mr. Adesogan, taking to his Twitter handle, @DejiAdesogan, said that the operation was carried out by Nigerian Navy personnel, in collaboration with officals of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
Nigerians react
Reacting to the raid, however, some Nigerians hailed the security operatives while other condemned them for ‘condescending so low’ for involving themselves in such ‘cheap’ activities.
Nwa Ani, @Aniogb tweeted:
“Navy? Why Navy please?”
Vandi Koji, @vandy210, responded to Nwa Ani:
“Is it that you don’t know that navies carry out ground operations too, or you also want to just condemn everything Nigerian?”
Zamani, @GeneralProspect, noted:
“Uncle D, bro, I don’t believe anyone force them into prostitution. I have met alot of them and have ask them series of questions. All of them have different stories to tell you. I met one of them few months ago. T to my greatest surprise she’s a nurse.
“And she can deliver a pregnant woman. I was shocked when she was educating me on human body how they work and all that. But she said something which is: everywhere she goes looking for work, they want to sleep with her before they gave her the job.”
E.coli, @WXZLE, reacted:
“Lol. Most of them are never forced into it.”
SimiNow, @simi_now stated:
“No body can force you into prostitution if you don’t like it. My honest opinion.”
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, @Osegeee, asked:
“If they were rescued, why are they sitting like criminals?”
Azeez Amonla, @Alamonla, replied Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”
“It because people like you will ask for evidence of the raid.”
Suleiman Sani Yusuf, @suleimansaniyus, hailed:
“Nigerian Armed forces are doing us proud.”
And, U C Luther, @UCLuther1, added:
“Forced into seems arguable when you see most of them.”
