Human Rights Writers Association Of Nigeria (HURIWA) has scored the Augustine Alegeh-led hierarchy high in transparency, openness and accountability.

A Pro-transparency Non-Government Organization- Human Rights Writers Association Of Nigeria (HURIWA) has scored the Mr. Augustine Alegeh-led hierarchy high in transparency, openness and accountability.

This is contrary to insinuation alleging financial heist against the immediate past leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association.

Indeed, the Rights group has called on other such non-governmental organizations like the Nigerian Labour Congress [NLC] to emulate the sterling and qualitative accounting methods put in place by the immediate past leadership of NBA in administering those non-governmental institutions.

This was contained in a statement jointly endorsed by the National Coordinator Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko and the National Media Affairs Director Miss Zainab Yusuf of HURIWA.

HURIWA said it was privileged to have obtained a copy of the audited account and the financial statement for the year ended July 31st 2016.

The report was prepared by both the treasury department of the NBA headed by Mrs. Amina Ibrahim and a reputable independent auditing firm – Ade, Adebambo Adelalu & Co.

The Rights group noted that it has no reason to doubt the veracity or the accuracy of the audited accounts of the Nigeria Bar Association under the immediate past leadership.

That is given the fact that the reputable independent auditing firm disclosed that it conducted this specific auditing job in compliance with international standards on auditing and complied with ethical requirements and plan.

HURIWA stated thus: “We note with incredible disbelief the fact that some lawyers can descend into the arena of hear-say to peddle unsubstantiated rumors of financial misdeeds against the immediate past national hierarchy of the Lawyers’ Union even when there are proper channels to adopt and apply for a copy of the audited account.

“We have therefore cited the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act to seek and have obtained a clean copy of the audited report from which we have found out that the NBA’s accounting model was fundamentally reformed by the immediate past national executive headed by the Lagos-based Senior Advocate of Nigeria Mr. Augustine Alegeh who practically introduced stiff financial transaction mechanisms that eliminated avenues for fraud.”

“We are pleased to have established that there is no iota of truth in the rumors being peddled against the Mr. Augustine Alegeh-led immediate past leadership.

“We commend the outgone leadership for spending over N26 million in providing welfare for its members and for the completion of the imposing multi-storey structure in Abuja valued at several billions which cost a little less than N2 billion in what is regarded as the most prudent expenditure in project management of the year.”
