The Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, has reaffirmed its resolve to quicken the tempo of development of the Niger Delta region.

The NDDC Managing Director, Mr Nsima Ekere, stated this during a courtesy visit by the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE), Delta State, Prof. Akii Ibhadode, at the Commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt.

Mr Ekere, who was represented by the NDDC Executive Director Projects, Engr Samuel Adjogbe, FNSE, restated the Commission’s commitment to impact positively on public institutions within the Niger Delta, adding that it would continue to intervene to sustain development in the region.

Engr Adjogbe said: “We intervene in projects spread across the region. Usually, our first point of call are the state offices, where all urgent projects are collated and transferred to the headquarters. The commissioners representing the states on the NDDC board normally heads the committees at the state office level.”

He assured that the Commission would soon begin work on the access road to the university campus. “Urgent steps will be taken and we shall swing into action immediately,” he said.

Engr Adjogbe promised that the NDDC would also do its best to assist the university in building a library complex, noting that there was need for a preliminary design which would guide the Commission in capturing the project in its budget.

He said: “We are open to partnering with educational institutions on short-term training of youths of the Niger Delta region with special practical skills and also ensure that they are certified as capable of working in the respective industries in which they have been trained.”

Earlier in his remarks, the Vice Chancellor of FUPRE, Prof. Ibhadode, said that the university was aware of several interventions of NDDC in other universities within the Niger Delta region and was hopeful that the agency would also support it.

He commended the Board and Management of NDDC, for embarking on development projects and programmes that impact on the lives of the people, assuring that any of the agency’s resources deployed to his institution would give tremendous dividends to the Niger Delta region.

Prof. Ibhadode stated that as a specialised university, saddled with the responsibility to produce high level manpower for the oil and gas industry, the institution needed support in the provision of access roads, hostels and other basic infrastructure. He expressed confidence in the activities of the NDDC, which he said had remained visible all over the region.
