NDLEA Arrests Doctor, Ivorian In Cocaine Trafficking Operation

LAGOS, NIGERIA – The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has arrested a medical doctor and an Ivorian national over alleged involvement in a cocaine trafficking operation that relied on ingestion and coordinated cross-border movement. Authorities said the case highlights the increasing sophistication of drug networks that now recruit professionals to bypass security detection.

DDM reports that operatives acted on intelligence-led surveillance before intercepting the suspects along suspected trafficking routes. Investigators said the operation followed close monitoring of movements linked to an international drug shipment attempt.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency confirmed that the Ivorian suspect ingested 82 wraps of cocaine in an attempt to smuggle the substance undetected. Officials explained that drug ingestion remains one of the most dangerous trafficking methods due to the high risk of rupture inside the body, which can lead to sudden overdose and death.

The agency alleged that the Nigerian medical doctor served as the coordinator of the trafficking network. Investigators said he handled planning, logistics, and coordination of the courier’s movement across borders.

Authorities stated that both suspects were placed under strict medical observation after arrest to safely recover the ingested substances. They noted that this procedure is necessary in ingestion cases to protect the suspect’s life and preserve evidence for investigation.

NDLEA officials said the operation forms part of ongoing nationwide efforts to dismantle drug trafficking syndicates operating through Nigeria’s international corridors. They added that cooperation with foreign enforcement agencies contributed to tracking the suspects.

Security experts say trafficking groups increasingly rely on professionals and multi-national couriers to reduce suspicion at checkpoints. They warned that this trend is complicating enforcement efforts and increasing the need for stronger international collaboration.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing all individuals involved in drug trafficking regardless of status or profession. It urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious drug-related activities to law enforcement.

Investigations are continuing to identify other members of the network and determine the full scale of the operation’s international connections.
