NDPC proposes fines for Data Violators, ensuring accountability.

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) intends to impose substantial fines on organizations violating citizens’ data beginning in January 2025.

This commitment, announced by National Commissioner Dr. Vincent Olatunji during his annual plans reveal, demonstrates the Commission’s adherence to the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA).

Previously, the NDPC had yet to impose any fines, but Dr. Olatunji emphasized that this will change in the coming year.

He remarked, “In 2025, data controllers and processors will face robust enforcement. Although we have never issued fines, prepare for significant penalties moving forward.”

Additionally, he confirmed the launch of the second phase of the 2023-2027 Roadmap this year.

One key initiative in this phase focuses on creating job opportunities through the training of data protection experts, which commenced last year.

Dr. Olatunji assured that by 2025, Nigerians will experience the benefits of these trained professionals as they enhance the global talent pool in the data protection sector.

Olatunji also noted the rising demand for skilled workers within this industry.

He stated, “Numerous data controllers and processors seek qualified individuals.

In response, we will facilitate further opportunities for those certified in 2024, helping them enter the job market.”

Lastly, Dr. Olatunji committed to enhancing advocacy efforts around data protection awareness nationwide.

This initiative aims to ensure citizens are informed about their rights regarding data privacy and understand the significance of data protection laws.
