NEMA’s solutions to anticipated 2025 flooding in Imo state

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has been working proactively to mitigate the impact of anticipated flooding in Imo State.

NEMA conducted a one-day sensitization program for stakeholders and community leaders in Imo State to raise awareness about the predicted floods and develop measures to mitigate their impact.

The agency engaged with traditional rulers, emphasizing their crucial role in disseminating information to locals, particularly in rural areas where access to radio and television is limited.

NEMA also partnered with security agencies, such as the police and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, to ensure effective response and support during emergencies.

NEMA conducted a flood disaster response simulation exercise, codenamed “Ide Mmiri Odachi,” in collaboration with state and local government emergency management agencies, security agencies, and other stakeholders.

The exercise aimed to test NEMA’s plans and protocols, expose gaps, and strengthen multi-agency collaboration in responding to flood disasters.

The simulation was conducted in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State, which shares similar flood risk profiles with Imo State .

NEMA organized a four-day capacity training program for stakeholders to equip them with emergency response skills.

The training focused on defining roles and responsibilities in mitigating risks and responding effectively to emergencies at the grassroots level.

NEMA inaugurated the NEOC to coordinate flood response measures across Nigeria, including Imo State.

The centre serves as a central platform for real-time flood monitoring, data collection, information sharing, and deployment of response resources.

NEMA works closely with state agencies, such as the Imo State Emergency Management Agency, to ensure effective response and support during emergencies.

The agency also collaborates with other stakeholders, including the Nigerian Navy, Federal Road Safety Corps, and Red Cross, to leverage their expertise and resources.

NEMA conducts public awareness campaigns to educate residents in flood-prone areas about the risks and consequences of flooding.

The agency advises residents to take proactive measures, such as relocating to safer areas, avoiding dumping refuse in waterways, and being prepared for emergencies .
