NHRC reaffirms commitment to democracy, human rights on democracy day

As Nigeria celebrates Democracy Day in 2025, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged stronger safeguards for human rights nationwide.

This day honors democracy advocates’ sacrifices while reflecting on Nigeria’s progress since 1999, when civilian rule began.
The NHRC emphasizes that protecting rights strengthens democracy and promotes lasting peace for the entire nation.

In a powerful statement, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, the NHRC Executive Secretary, highlighted the crucial link between democracy and human dignity.
He declared, “After 26 years of democracy, we must reaffirm our dedication to justice, equality, and peace,” emphasizing its importance for Nigeria’s future.

Additionally, Dr. Ojukwu outlined the NHRC’s efforts to strengthen democracy through voter education and election monitoring. By promoting citizen participation, the Commission ensures elections remain free and fair. Furthermore, it holds leaders accountable, demanding governance that prioritizes human rights.

Ahead of the 2023 elections, the NHRC organized town halls with candidates to secure commitments to rights-based governance. Today, the Commission continues engaging officials to uphold these values. “Democracy and human rights are inseparable,” Dr. Ojukwu stressed, honoring those who fought for accountable leadership.

However, he expressed concern over rising insecurity and economic struggles eroding citizens’ rights. He urged governments to protect lives, deliver justice, and tackle poverty and violence. Without addressing these challenges, democracy remains fragile.

The NHRC also called for recognizing unsung heroes of Nigeria’s democracy, including electoral officials from the historic 1993 election. “Justice demands honoring those who conducted our freest election,” Dr. Ojukwu asserted. Their contributions, he argued, deserve national recognition.
