The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) announced it will investigate the death of Kelechi, a 39-year-old Nigerian man.
This decision comes after reports of a violent confrontation with Swiss police in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Furthermore, a widely circulating video on social media shows Kelechi being pinned down by a police officer.
In the video, Kelechi cries out in pain and shouts, “You’re hurting me,” highlighting the severity of the incident.

The footage has sparked widespread outrage among Nigerians, with many demanding justice for the deceased.

An X user, @ChuksEricE, who shared the video, alleged that Kelechi succumbed to his injuries after the incident. Another user, Somto Okonkwo, described Kelechi as a “hardworking Igbo man” and claimed he was “crying out for help while the officer pressed down on his neck.” According to Okonkwo, Kelechi leaves behind three young children in Nigeria.

Reports indicate that Kelechi collapsed and died at the police station less than an hour after being taken into custody. Swiss authorities have issued a statement, as reported by AFP, claiming the incident occurred during a routine police check related to suspected drug activity. They allege that Kelechi became unwell during questioning and died despite emergency resuscitation efforts.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office in the Vaud region of Switzerland has launched a criminal investigation into the matter. An autopsy and additional forensic examinations are underway, with crime scene investigators and medical experts contributing to the probe.

He stated during the interview with reporters, “Irrespective of whatever the person may have done, he should have received fair treatment.”

Balogun emphasized that NIDCOM actively seeks to uncover the truth behind the matter.
He assured the public that their efforts focus on accurate and transparent investigation processes.

Kelechi’s death. “If we are able to gather all the necessary information surrounding his death, we will issue an official statement. Also, if the family can reach out to us or send a formal petition, we will be in a better position to know what happened.”

The commission emphasized its dedication to ensuring justice and called on anyone with relevant information to come forward. NIDCOM also urged the family of the deceased to formally engage with the commission to facilitate further action.

As investigations continue both in Switzerland and through NIDCOM’s efforts, the incident has reignited concerns about the treatment of Nigerians abroad and the need for accountability in cases involving law enforcement.
