Nigeria launches E-Visa system to modernize travel; security effective May 1

Nigeria has launched a groundbreaking E-Visa system and automated entry-exit protocols to strengthen national security and streamline travel.

Starting May 1, 2025, the measures aim to replace manual processes, Interior Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo announced Wednesday.

The initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” prioritizing innovation in governance.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo emphasized the dual benefits of enhanced security and efficiency during a press briefing.

“These systems position Nigeria as a leader in border management innovation,” he stated.

Furthermore, he clarified that travelers will experience faster processing without compromising safety checks.

The minister credited cross-agency collaboration for the project’s success, notably praising the Ministry of Aviation.

Under Minister Festus Keyamo’s leadership, aviation authorities integrated the automated systems seamlessly.

Similarly, agencies like FAAN and NCAA contributed technical expertise to ensure operational readiness.

Meanwhile, Keyamo affirmed the aviation sector’s commitment to a smooth rollout.

We’ve upgraded infrastructure at all entry points to meet deadlines,” he said.

Additionally, staff training programs are underway to minimize disruptions during the transition.

The E-Visa platform allows applicants worldwide to submit requests and track approvals online.

Consequently, consulate visits will reduce, easing logistical burdens for tourists and business travelers.

Automated landing cards will also digitize passenger data, cutting airport queues significantly.

These reforms reflect Nigeria’s broader strategy to adopt global best practices in public service.

By automating high-traffic procedures, the government aims to curb bureaucratic delays and human error.

Simultaneously, advanced analytics will monitor entry patterns, aiding crime prevention efforts.

Industry experts predict the changes will boost tourism and foreign investment.

Travel associations have welcomed the move, citing competitive advantages over regional peers.

However, cybersecurity analysts urge robust data protection measures to safeguard sensitive information.

Public reactions remain mixed, with some citizens questioning implementation timelines.

“Adequate testing is critical before launch,” cautioned Lagos-based tech consultant Adeola Okoye.

Conversely, international airlines operating in Nigeria praised the anticipated efficiency gains.

The government plans nationwide awareness campaigns to familiarize travelers with the new processes.

Interactive tutorials and helplines will address queries ahead of the May deadline. Stakeholders confirm mock trials at major airports will begin in early 2025.

Economists argue that modernized immigration systems could elevate Nigeria’s global business rankings.

Transparent processes may also reduce corruption risks historically linked to manual screenings.

Nonetheless, advocacy groups stress the need for inclusive access to avoid excluding non-tech-savvy travelers.

As the deadline nears, authorities remain optimistic about achieving seamless integration.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo reiterated that feedback from pilot tests will refine final implementations.

“This is a transformative leap,” he asserted, “and we’re committed to excellence.”

The overhaul marks Nigeria’s boldest immigration reform in decades, signaling ambition to rival global hubs like Dubai and Singapore.

With sustained execution, the nation could redefine its reputation as a progressive, secure destination for global citizens.
