Nigeria: New Police Commissioners deployed to Anambra, Taraba

Police investigates the death of a beggar in Niger State

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the appointment of new Commissioners of Police for Taraba and Anambra State Commands.

The appointments, announced on Wednesday, January 5th, 2025, are part of the Commission’s efforts to ensure effective policing and maintain law and order across the country.

Chukwudi Chris Ariekpere, a seasoned police officer from Abia State, has been appointed as the new Commissioner of Police for Taraba State.

He takes over from CP Peter Oparah, who has been redeployed to another assignment.

Ariekpere’s vast experience in policing, particularly in crisis management and community policing, is expected to bring a new level of professionalism to the Taraba State Command.

Similarly, Livingstein Ikioye Orutugu, a highly decorated police officer from Bayelsa State, has been appointed as the new Commissioner of Police for Anambra State.

He succeeds Obong Nnache Itam, who has completed his tenure as Commissioner of Police.

Orutugu’s expertise in intelligence gathering and crime prevention is expected to enhance the security architecture of Anambra State.

DIG Hashimu Argungu, Chairman of the Police Service Commission, has charged the new Commissioners to “quickly settle down to their new duty posts and ensure there is no gap that may necessitate a breakdown of law and order.”

He emphasized the importance of dedication and commitment to duty, stating that the new CPs must assist in ensuring that Nigeria is freed from the menace of bandits and deviants.

Argungu also assured that the Commission will continue to monitor the conduct of the new Commissioners and provide support to ensure their success in their new roles.

He noted that the Commission is committed to ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force is well-equipped to tackle the security challenges facing the country.

The Police Service Commission

The Police Service Commission is an independent body established by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to oversee the appointment, promotion, and discipline of police officers.

The Commission is chaired by DIG Hashimu Argungu, a retired police officer with over three decades of experience in policing.
