Nigeria is set to manufacture aircraft locally, thanks to a new partnership between the federal government, XeJet, and local banks.

The development was announced by Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development.

The proposed aircraft manufacturing facility aims to establish Nigeria as a regional aviation hub.

Keyamo emphasized that this project aligns with the government’s goal of supporting regional operators and advancing the country’s aviation sector.

The facility will be built in partnership with XeJet and local banks.

A training centre will also be established to provide thorough training in airline operations and business models.

Additionally, a $10 million Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul facility will be constructed near the second runway at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

According to Keyamo, “Since we came to office, we’ve been focused on attracting MRO facilities to our aviation ecosystem, just as they exist in other parts of the world. We’ve searched far and wide for investors, but now we see that what we were looking for elsewhere is right here at home.”

The Minister expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating that it will not only serve Nigeria but also attract users from across the West African sub-region. The project is expected to be completed within 18 months.

The federal government has also signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding with Boeing, one of the world’s top aircraft manufacturers, to address the aviation sector’s long-term problems, including the shortage of aircraft.
