Nigeria to end petrol importation in four weeks – Dangote

Aliko Dangote, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Dangote Group, has announced that Nigeria will stop importing petrol by June, thanks to the Dangote Refinery’s capacity to meet West Africa’s petrol, diesel, and aviation fuel demand.

Speaking at the Africa CEO Forum Annual Summit in Kigali, Rwanda, Dangote expressed optimism about the transformation of Africa’s energy landscape. He stated that within four years, Africa will no longer import fertilizers, as his company will make the continent self-sufficient in potash, phosphate, and urea.

According to Dangote, “Nigeria has no reason to import gasoline, and by June, the country won’t need to import a single liter of gasoline.” He highlighted the progress made by the oil company to ensure Africa becomes self-sufficient in the energy sector.

The Dangote Refinery has the capacity to meet the entire demand for polypropylene and polyethylene in Africa and will export some to Brazil and Mexico. Dangote emphasized the need for Africa to change its narrative from producing raw materials and exporting them to producing finished products and creating jobs.

He acknowledged the challenges faced in building the refinery, particularly from those accustomed to the status quo, but stressed that failure was not an option. Despite the achievements, Dangote noted that policy inconsistency remains a major challenge for African entrepreneurs and called for a review and support from leaders to ensure proper ease of trading in the continent.

The Dangote Refinery, commissioned in February, is producing jet fuel, diesel, and will start producing gasoline by next month. With a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, 1 million tonnes of polypropylene, and 590,000 carbon black, the refinery will supply West Africa, Central Africa, and South Africa.
