(DDM) – The Nigerian Army has approved the establishment of a Model Defence Comprehensive School in Delta State, a strategic educational project designed to serve the South-South geopolitical zone.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) notes that the development was officially announced by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, during a courtesy visit to the Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori, in Asaba on Tuesday.
General Musa, who was represented by Rear Admiral Joseph Akpan, explained that the Defence Headquarters had resolved to establish a Model Defence Comprehensive School in each of the six geopolitical zones across the country to promote academic excellence, discipline, and moral training among Nigerian youths.
He noted that Delta State was chosen as the South-South host due to its strategic location, peaceful environment, and government’s consistent support for national security and education initiatives.
According to the Defence Chief, the new institution will combine academic learning with military values, grooming a new generation of disciplined citizens capable of contributing to Nigeria’s development and unity.
“This project is part of our broader effort to enhance civil-military relations and foster educational development nationwide,” General Musa said.
He added that the Defence Comprehensive Schools initiative will also create employment opportunities and stimulate infrastructural growth in the host states.
Receiving the delegation, Delta State Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme, expressed appreciation on behalf of the Governor, assuring that the state government would provide all necessary support for the school’s establishment and rapid takeoff.
Sir Onyeme described the project as both a national honour and a developmental milestone for Delta, adding that it would complement the state’s ongoing investments in education and youth empowerment.
He said, “We are proud that Delta has been selected to host this prestigious institution. It reflects the confidence the Nigerian Army and the Federal Government have in our capacity to sustain peace and development.”
The Deputy Governor pledged that Delta would make available land, infrastructure, and logistics to ensure the Defence Comprehensive School is completed within record time.
He further noted that the presence of a military-based academic institution would enhance discipline, foster patriotism, and strengthen national integration among young Nigerians in the Niger Delta region.
The announcement has been widely welcomed by education stakeholders, security experts, and community leaders, who praised the Nigerian Army for expanding its developmental footprint beyond traditional defence operations.
Observers told DDM that the Defence Comprehensive School model aligns with modern global standards of integrating civic education with military discipline to build character-driven leadership from a young age.
The initiative also supports the federal government’s vision of improving access to quality education while deepening unity and national identity among students across all regions.
With Delta State now confirmed as the South-South host, preparations are expected to commence immediately, marking another milestone in the Nigerian Army’s long-standing commitment to nation-building through education.
