Nigerian varsity fires 3 lecturers over sexual harassment

Three academic staff members of the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), have been dismissed following allegations of sexual misconduct.

This was confirmed in a statement issued by the institution.

Those affected by the disciplinary action are Mr. Nurudeen H. from the Department of Mass Communication, as well as Mr. Kareem Aigbaba and Mr. Olayinka Usman from the Department of Arts and Design.

Their dismissal was officially approved after a review by the university’s Governing Council, as outlined in a memo titled “Dismissal of Staff Members Due to Sexual Harassment Allegations.”

The decision, the memo stated, is in line with Section 5.5.2(v) of the University Senior Staff Conditions of Service.

“The Governing Council of Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) has taken decisive action in response to allegations of sexual harassment involving three staff members. After a thorough investigation and deliberation, the council has approved the dismissal.

“This decision, which is effective immediately, is in accordance with Section 5.5.2(v) of the University Senior Staff Conditions of Service,” the memo reads.

The university stressed that its zero-tolerance policy on sexual misconduct guided the outcome of the investigation and underpinned the disciplinary measures taken.

“The university takes allegations of sexual harassment seriously, as they compromise the institution’s image and disrupt the academic environment. The Governing Council’s decision reflects the university’s commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful campus community,” the memo adds.

While confirming the development, LASUSTECH’s spokesman, Olanrewaju Kuye, said that the matter was thoroughly reviewed by the school’s disciplinary committee.

“It is true, the three of them were dismissed”.
