Nigeria’s Aviation sector fosters unity through collaboration, growth

In a significant move to promote unity and excellence within Nigeria’s aviation sector, the Federal Government has expressed its commendation for stakeholders’ collaborative efforts. The Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, through its Permanent Secretary, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, mni, reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that enhance industry standards and foster social responsibility.

During a courtesy visit by Mr. Fortune Idu, CEO of the Nigeria Aviation Award (NIGAV), alongside the newly crowned 2025 King and Queen of the Air, Mr. Henry Chika and Ms. Aisha Yakub, and representatives of SOS Children’s Village, Dr. Kana emphasized the importance of unity among airline operators. He noted that such partnerships align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda by promoting regional and religious harmony.

“The unity displayed by airline operators strengthens government efforts to project Nigeria’s aviation sector positively. Such partnerships enhance harmony and contribute to the overall growth of the industry,” Dr. Kana stated during the meeting at his office on May 27, 2025.

The Ministry also endorsed NIGAV’s King and Queen of the Air initiative, which recognizes cabin crew excellence and fosters camaraderie among airlines. Dr. Kana remarked,We endorse noble endeavors like the King and Queen of the Air contest, which exemplify excellence and unity. The Ministry stands ready to assist in advocacy and awareness campaigns that benefit the aviation community.”

Mr. Fortune Idu highlighted NIGAV’s 25-year legacy in promoting aviation excellence through various initiatives, including the Airport Summit, Drone Tech Expo, and the annual Performance Benchmark assessment. He further noted that Festus Keyamo, SAN, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, was a recipient of the “Aviation Personality of the Year” award for his contributions to the sector.

Speaking on the King and Queen of the Air contest, Mr. Idu explained that it celebrates exceptional cabin crew members who elevate passenger inflight experiences while fostering friendship among airlines. The 2025 titleholders, Mr. Chika and Ms. Yakub, were recognized for their leadership and dedication to enhancing in-flight service. As part of their ambassadorial roles, they pledged to donate a portion of their privileges to SOS Children’s Villages, highlighting aviation’s role in societal development.

Representatives from SOS Children’s Villages also shared insights into their mission during the visit. Operating in Nigeria since 1973 and active in over 130 countries, SOS provides stable homes, education, and healthcare to vulnerable children. The organization aims to empower three million children globally, with collaborations across sectors amplifying their impact.

“Partnerships with industries like aviation enable us to reach more vulnerable youth and empower them to thrive as contributing members of society,” a representative from SOS Children’s Villages stated.

The Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development reiterated its commitment to fostering initiatives that elevate service standards, enhance passenger experiences, and contribute to societal progress. The collaboration between NIGAV, SOS Children’s Villages, and the aviation sector underscores a shared vision for growth, unity, and social responsibility within Nigeria’s aviation industry.
