NNPCL boss says powerful interests threaten his life over reforms

(DDM) – The Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Bayo Ojulari, has revealed that powerful vested interests are threatening his life due to ongoing refinery revival reforms.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that Ojulari made the disclosure while receiving union leaders in Abuja, highlighting the high-stakes nature of the reforms and the resistance from entrenched interests within the petroleum sector.

Ojulari alleged that some individuals and groups opposed to the ongoing initiatives are actively plotting to remove him from office, seeking to stall the efforts to restore Nigeria’s refining capabilities.

He described the situation as a significant personal risk but affirmed that it would not deter his mission to implement critical reforms.

The NNPCL chief stressed that the refinery revival programme is modeled after the successful operational framework of the Nigeria LNG, which he believes provides a blueprint for efficiency, transparency, and sustainable operations.

He reiterated that the initiatives are in line with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to restore full refinery capacity and reduce dependence on imported refined petroleum products.

TVMetroMedia (TVM) reports that Ojulari categorically stated he is not driven by politics but by a commitment to reform.

He emphasized that his focus is on revamping Nigeria’s refineries, ensuring operational efficiency, and addressing long-standing inefficiencies that have plagued the sector for decades.

Representatives of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) expressed concerns over potential disruptions and sector stability but affirmed their support for Ojulari’s reform agenda.

They noted the importance of leadership commitment in overcoming systemic challenges in the petroleum industry.

Ojulari urged stakeholders, including unions, regulatory agencies, and private sector partners, to collaborate closely with the management team to ensure successful implementation of the reforms.

He highlighted that restoring refinery capacity is crucial not only for economic growth but also for energy security and job creation in Nigeria.
