Nollywood Mourns as Obi Nwokedi Akiyesi Passes Away After Over 20 Years in Film Industry

Veteran Nollywood actor Obi Nwokedi Akiyesi has been confirmed dead, with the news sparking widespread grief across Nigeria’s film industry.

The announcement was made on Monday by the president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Abubakar Yakubu, who stated that the actor passed away on Sunday after reportedly going to bed and not waking up.

According to the guild, Akiyesi’s remains have been deposited in a mortuary in Abuja, where he passed away, while further details surrounding the exact cause of death are still being awaited from his family.

Born in Ososo, Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State, Akiyesi began his acting journey in the late 1990s and went on to build a long-standing career in Nollywood spanning over two decades. He became known for his versatility and strong presence in character-driven roles, as well as his work behind the scenes as a producer.

Throughout his career, he featured in more than 100 films, including titles such as Marry Who You Love, Kiss My Pain, Heart of a Saint, Deadly Affair, Gen Z Wife, Olaedo The Fisher Girl, Pretty Liars, and Desperate Ladies. His performances earned him recognition as a dependable supporting actor who contributed significantly to the growth of the industry.
