Not just a potbelly: Experts warn of hidden dangers to men’s health
DDM News

(DDM) – Health experts have raised alarm over the growing health risks associated with the common “potbelly” among men.
They warn that the protruding belly, often viewed as harmless or even a sign of prosperity, is far more dangerous than many realise.
DDM gathered that this abdominal fat, medically referred to as visceral fat, is stored deep inside the abdomen and can cause serious health complications.
Visceral fat wraps around vital organs such as the liver, pancreas, and intestines.
Unlike the fat just beneath the skin, visceral fat is metabolically active, releasing harmful hormones and inflammatory substances that disrupt normal body functions.
Experts say that as visceral fat builds up, it can trigger chronic low-grade inflammation in the body.
It can also cause insulin resistance, which impairs blood sugar control and significantly increases the risk of type 2 diabetes.
Medical findings show that excessive belly fat is a key contributor to hormonal imbalances in men.
Testosterone, the primary male sex hormone, is often reduced due to the presence of an enzyme in belly fat called aromatase.
Aromatase converts testosterone into estrogen, leading to higher levels of the female hormone in men.
This hormonal imbalance can result in reduced libido, muscle loss, fatigue, depression, and erectile dysfunction.
Increased estrogen levels in men have also been linked to low sperm count, mood swings, and the development of breast tissue.
Health specialists also note that belly fat raises cortisol, the stress hormone, creating a vicious cycle.
High cortisol promotes more belly fat, while also weakening immunity, disturbing sleep, and lowering testosterone further.
The risks extend beyond hormones, as men with potbellies face higher chances of developing cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, and fatty liver disease.
Sleep apnea, an often-overlooked but dangerous sleep disorder, is also more common in those with excessive abdominal fat.
Doctors advise men to take proactive steps to reduce belly fat and restore hormonal balance.
This includes adopting a healthy diet rich in whole grains, vegetables, fruits, legumes, lean proteins, and healthy fats.
Sugary drinks, processed foods, alcohol, and saturated fats should be avoided or minimised.
Regular exercise combining cardio activities and strength training is strongly recommended.
Experts say resistance training helps naturally increase testosterone while burning belly fat.
Adequate sleep of seven to eight hours per night is also essential for hormonal health.
Managing stress through relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or prayer can further support recovery.
Health practitioners stress that excessive alcohol intake, particularly beer, contributes significantly to belly fat in men.
Men experiencing symptoms like low energy, poor sexual performance, or mood changes are advised to seek medical evaluation.
Early detection of hormonal imbalances and related conditions can prevent long-term health complications.
Public health advocates emphasise that ignoring a potbelly is no longer an option, as the hidden risks can be life-threatening.
