NSC. DG, Congratulates D’Tigers

As team secures ticket to 2025 Afrobasket

The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, on Monday, congratulated Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, the D’Tigers, for picking the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket ticket.

Olopade commended the team’s efforts and resilience throughout the qualifiers, and reaffirmed the NSC’s commitment to supporting Nigerian basketball.

Nigeria’s senior men’s Basketball team, the D’Tigers on Sunday, thrashed Cape Verde to cement their position in the 2nd window of theFIBA Afrobasket qualification series.

Despite having qualified for the 2025 FIBA Afrobasket before the game against Cape Verde, the D’Tigers left no stone unturned as they brushed aside Cape Verde 77-62 points in their last group B qualifiers, owing to a very strong performance in the fourth quarter.

Cape Verde took the first quarter 26-22.

But D’Tigers bounced back with a 26-7 routing in the second quarter to take a 15-point lead at the break.

Cape Verde took the third quarter 21-13 but D’Tigers sealed the win with a heartwarming 16- 8 points in the fourth quarter.

The win against Cape Verde took the D’Tigers to second on their table.

D’Tigers will now compete at the 2025 Afrobasket after winning all their games in the second window.

This achievement marks a significant turnaround for the team after having failed to win a single game in the first window of the qualifiers.

The team had earlier pulled out of the qualifiers due to lack of funds.

however they later rejoined the competition where they went on to win all their games.

Earlier in the qualification session, the D’Tigers defeated the hosts, Libya, 75-70.

Nigeria then defeated Uganda 87-67.

The National Sports Commission Chairman, Mr. Olapade said the D’Tigers’ qualification for the 2025 Afrobasket is a testament to the resilience and determination of the players and coaches of the team, and the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF). He stated that the Commission remains dedicated to ensuring that Nigerian basketball continues to thrive on the global stage.

He further emphasized the positive impact early preparations will have on the team’s performance at the Afrobasket. The D’Tigers will now begin preparations for the Tournament.

This year’s edition is the 31st edition and Tunisia are the reigning Champions of the FIBA Afrobasket tournament.

D’Tigers book Afrobasket ticketThe 2025 AfroBasket will hold from 12-24 August in Angola, and the D’Tigers surely will be gunning for gold.
