Kano, Nigeria –On Wednesday, April 9, 2025, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Kano Command apprehended five suspects.

Targeted schools included Government Secondary School Unguwar Rimi and Government Secondary School Unguwa Uku.

NSCDC apprehended four suspects, as confirmed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SC Ibrahim Idris Abdullahi.

The suspects—Abdulbasi Usman (19), Yahaya Isa (20), Abubakar Sadiq Abdullahi (20), and Adamu Murtala (20)—face accusations of stealing and damaging school properties.

The authorities emphasize the seriousness of these actions, highlighting the negative impact on the educational environment.

Consequently, the Command is committed to ensuring justice and restoring safety in schools.

Notably, the suspects reside in Unguwar Rimi (Kumbotso LGA) and Unguwa Uku (Tarauni LGA).

Authorities reported stolen items such as roofing sheets, iron rods, 20 three-seater chairs, mats, windows, and ceiling fans.

Additionally, thieves took critical documents and learning materials during the incidents.

Meanwhile, SC Abdullahi confirmed recovery efforts are ongoing, with some items allegedly sold to a detained receiver.

He emphasized the Corps’ resolve to ensure justice prevails.

In a parallel operation, NSCDC arrested a fifth suspect, 17-year-old Alasan Inusa, in Dambatta LGA for vandalizing electric poles.

Recovered items included six insulators, a three-meter aluminum cable, nuts, and brass materials.

Investigations into both cases concluded swiftly, and suspects will face prosecution promptly.

Commandant Shafi’u Abdulmumini reiterated the NSCDC’s commitment to protecting public infrastructure and combating crime.

Furthermore, he assured residents of intensified surveillance to deter future attacks on educational and energy facilities.

The Command urged communities to report suspicious activities immediately.

This crackdown follows rising concerns over vandalism disrupting education and infrastructure in Kano.

Schools and power installations remain frequent targets, hampering development and safety.

The NSCDC’s proactive measures highlight their role in safeguarding national assets.

By arresting perpetrators, the Corps aims to restore public trust and ensure accountability.

Critically, the arrests underscore the link between vandalism and broader criminal networks. Recovering stolen goods exposes how stolen materials enter illegal markets, fueling further crimes.

Community leaders have praised the NSCDC’s actions, calling for stricter penalties to deter offenders. Parents and students expressed relief, citing prolonged disruptions to academic activities.

However, challenges persist in securing vulnerable facilities. Many schools lack fencing, security personnel, or surveillance systems, making them easy targets for vandalism.

To address this, the NSCDC plans to collaborate with local governments to enhance school security. Proposed measures include installing lights, alarms, and community patrol units.

Similarly, protecting energy infrastructure remains a priority, as vandalism plunges neighborhoods into darkness and economic losses. The Command vows to dismantle syndicates targeting these assets.

As legal proceedings advance, the NSCDC warns vandals to cease operations or face consequences. The public is reminded that damaging public property violates national laws.

Ultimately, these arrests mark a critical step in preserving Kano’s development strides. Combating vandalism ensures resources serve their intended purpose: empowering communities through education and stability.
