ASABA, Nigeria — The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has commended Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for approving enhanced career progression for graduate teachers in the state, describing the decision as a major step toward addressing years of stagnation in the teaching profession.
The union said the governor’s approval resolves a long-standing concern affecting many graduate teachers whose career advancement had been delayed despite meeting the required qualifications and years of service. According to the NUT, the development will improve staff morale and strengthen confidence among teachers across the state’s public education system.
The union noted that the improved career progression policy would provide deserving teachers with better opportunities for promotion and professional growth while recognising their contributions to the education sector. It added that the decision reflects the state government’s commitment to improving the welfare and motivation of educators.
NUT officials praised Governor Oborevwori for demonstrating responsiveness to the concerns of teachers and engaging constructively with stakeholders in the education sector. They expressed optimism that the policy would encourage greater dedication, productivity and commitment among teachers in public schools.
The union further stated that improved career prospects are essential for attracting and retaining qualified professionals in the teaching profession. It argued that rewarding competence and experience contributes to higher standards of teaching and ultimately benefits students through improved learning outcomes.
Education stakeholders have long advocated reforms to address career stagnation among teachers, noting that limited advancement opportunities often affect motivation and reduce the attractiveness of the profession. They believe policies that recognise academic qualifications and years of service are vital to building a stronger education system.
The Delta State Government has consistently identified education as one of its development priorities, implementing policies aimed at improving school infrastructure, enhancing teacher welfare and expanding access to quality education. The latest approval is expected to complement ongoing efforts to strengthen the state’s public education sector.
The NUT also appealed to the government to sustain dialogue with education stakeholders and continue implementing policies that improve working conditions for teachers. The union emphasised that investments in teacher development and welfare remain critical to achieving lasting improvements in educational standards.
Teachers across the state welcomed the development, expressing hope that the enhanced career progression would be implemented promptly and transparently. Many described the approval as a significant boost to professional development and a recognition of their dedication to educating future generations.
The Nigeria Union of Teachers reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the Delta State Government to promote policies that advance the teaching profession and improve the quality of education. The union expressed confidence that the latest reform would contribute to a more motivated workforce and support the state’s broader educational development objectives.
