Peter Obi has criticized the political turmoil in Rivers State, describing it as harmful to Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

Speaking in an interview according to Diaspora Digital Media (DDM), he condemned the emergency rule and the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara by President Tinubu.

Obi stated that such actions erode the democratic space and create fear among governors considering contesting in the 2027 elections.

He emphasized that reelection should be based on performance rather than intimidation or coercion by the federal government.

Rotimi Amaechi also criticized Tinubu’s actions, calling them unconstitutional and a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.

He accused the president of using emergency rule to weaken opposition governors and consolidate political power before the next election.

Amaechi urged lawmakers to reject the suspension of Fubara, warning against setting dangerous precedents in Nigeria’s democracy.

The emergency rule followed pipeline explosions in the Niger Delta, which Tinubu cited as a security threat.

Critics argue that the move is politically motivated and undermines the democratic rights of Rivers State residents.

The Nigerian Bar Association has also condemned the suspension of elected officials as unconstitutional and illegal.

Despite opposition, the National Assembly approved the emergency rule, allowing federal control over the state for six months.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan and Wole Soyinka have voiced concerns about the impact on Nigeria’s democratic future.

They argue that removing an elected governor through emergency rule weakens federalism and democratic governance in Nigeria.

The crisis highlights tensions between the federal and state governments, raising questions about the limits of presidential power.
