ABUJA, NIGERIA — National Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on the Federal Government to take decisive action to end the escalating killings and displacement in Plateau State, where an estimated 45,000 residents from over 20 communities have been forced to flee their homes due to persistent attacks.
In a statement issued on Monday, Obi condemned the recurring violence that has ravaged communities across the state, describing the situation as a humanitarian crisis demanding urgent intervention. He noted that the displacement of thousands of families has compounded the already dire humanitarian situation in the region, leaving many without access to food, shelter, or medical care.
“The continued killings and displacement in Plateau State are unacceptable and must be addressed with the urgency they deserve,” Obi stated. “No Nigerian should be forced to abandon their ancestral home because the government cannot guarantee their safety.”
Obi called on security agencies to intensify efforts to protect vulnerable communities, apprehend perpetrators of violence, and restore peace to the affected areas. He also urged the government to provide immediate relief to displaced families, including shelter, food, and medical supplies, while working toward lasting solutions to the conflict.
The NDC presidential candidate emphasized that the crisis in Plateau reflects broader failures in Nigeria’s security architecture, warning that without meaningful intervention, the violence could spread to other parts of the country. He reiterated his commitment to prioritising security, economic development, and social justice if elected.
Obi’s call comes amid a series of attacks in Plateau State that have claimed dozens of lives and displaced thousands of residents. The violence, which has been linked to long-standing communal conflicts, has continued despite repeated government promises to address the security challenges in the region.
The Federal Government has yet to respond to Obi’s call, but the former Anambra governor’s statement has drawn attention to the plight of displaced communities in Plateau State. As the humanitarian situation worsens, the pressure on the government to act is expected to intensify.
