Ali Modu Sheriff, former Borno State governor and ex-national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed confidence that Mr. Peter Obi will return to the PDP and run for president in 2027.
He said this while speaking during an interview on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme aired on Monday.
Sheriff believes Obi is biding his time before rejoining the PDP, adding that information available to him suggests Obi will return and run as the party’s presidential candidate.
“The information available to me is that at any moment from now Peter Obi will go back to PDP and run as a presidential candidate under PDP”, he said.
Last week, Jerry Gana, a founding member of the PDP, confirmed the party is working to bring Obi back, stating, “Why not?” when asked about contacting Obi.
Gana added that the party’s platform is now solid and ready to move, which might attract Obi and other former members.
However, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) insists Obi remains committed to the opposition coalition and is aware of the risks of rejoining the PDP, which the ADC claims is still influenced by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Obi’s potential return to the PDP could impact the 2027 presidential election dynamics, especially if he decides to run under the PDP banner.
Meanwhile, other aspirants like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar are also positioning themselves for the election.
