
The Nigerian Police has responded to Governor Willie Obiano’s claim that his security details were withdrawn just ahead of the upcoming Anambra State governorship election.
Speaking, the Inspector General of Police, Idris Ibrahim the withdrawal of the security aides attached to Governor Obiano was to prevent corrupt tendencies that attends election in the country.
Rather, to enforce security, the police had deployed 26,000 personnels, 300 vehicles, three helicopters and 15 gunboats for the poll.
IGP Idris gave the explanation during election stakeholders’ forum organised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Tuesday in Awka.
Obiano had raised alarm that that his ADC had been directed by the police high command to vacate him on Tuesday morning.
He said the development put his life in danger and is unacceptable and unfair to his person and office.
Obiano did not hesitate to remind anyone who cares to listen that his standing for re-election did not did not diminish him as the chief security officer of the state.
Allaying his fears, the IGP said the withdrawal was based on the previous incident where an ADC to a certain governor was caught by the military escorting a vehicle loaded with arms on election day.
“We do not mean anything bad to Anambra governor on this action; his ADC will be returned to him early Sunday morning after the governorship election on Saturday Nov.18.
“We have equally withdrawn all the policemen attached to political appointees, local government chairmen and others in Anambra till after the election,” he said.
