(DDM) – Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) have called for peace following violent clashes between Urhobo and Itsekiri youths in Warri.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the incident, which saw stone-throwing and minor property damage, has raised fears of wider community unrest in the oil-rich city.
Speaking at a press conference held at the UPU secretariat, Governor Oborevwori urged restraint and dialogue as the best path to de-escalation.
He emphasised the need for traditional rulers, community leaders, and security agencies to work collectively to restore calm and foster reconciliation.
According to him, Warri’s multi-ethnic nature makes peaceful coexistence non-negotiable for the region’s economic and social stability.
The UPU described the clashes as “unfortunate” and reminded both communities of their shared history and interdependent livelihoods.
They urged residents not to allow isolated incidents to undermine the peace-building efforts that have been sustained over the years.
Security agencies have intensified patrols across identified flashpoints while mediators engage youth leaders to prevent further confrontations.
Community stakeholders are also advocating the formation of joint committees to address grievances before they spiral into violence.
The recent clashes come amid broader concerns about ethnic rivalries in Delta State, where resource-based tensions have historically triggered unrest.
Observers warn that failure to maintain dialogue and inclusiveness in community engagement could lead to long-term instability in the region.
However, both Governor Oborevwori and the UPU have assured residents that immediate steps are being taken to prevent escalation.
Investigations into the underlying cause of the confrontation are ongoing, with authorities promising a fair and transparent review process.
Residents are being urged to remain law-abiding while traditional leaders and youth groups work to sustain peace.
