PORT HARCOURT, NIGERIA — A coalition of Ogoni youth groups has called on President Bola Tinubu to implement the Ogoni dialogue report. The group insisted on the creation of Bori State.
The demand was made on Saturday during a press conference in Port Harcourt. The group said the creation of Bori State is a long-standing aspiration of the Ogoni people.
The Demand
The coalition said the Ogoni people have suffered neglect and marginalisation for decades. It said the creation of Bori State would address these challenges.
It also called for the implementation of the report of the Ogoni dialogue. The report was submitted to the Federal Government in 2024.
“We are tired of waiting. The government must act now. We want Bori State, and we want the dialogue report implemented,” a coalition leader said.
The Dialogue Report
The Ogoni dialogue was initiated by the Federal Government to address the grievances of the Ogoni people. It covered issues such as environmental degradation, economic development, and political inclusion.
The report recommended the creation of Bori State, among other things.
What This Means
The demand highlights the ongoing struggle for minority rights and resource control in the Niger Delta. The Ogoni people have long complained of marginalisation and environmental pollution.
The creation of Bori State would be a significant step towards addressing these grievances.
What Happens Next
The group said it would continue to press for its demands. It urged the government to engage with the Ogoni people.
For now, the focus is on ensuring that the government responds to the demands. The coming months will reveal whether the government will act.
