ABEOKUTA, Ogun State — The Chief Judge of Ogun State, Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu, has called on lawyers and judges to uphold judicial integrity and ethical standards as a means of maintaining public confidence in the judiciary and ensuring the effective administration of justice in the state.

Justice Dipeolu made the call during a valedictory court session held in Abeokuta on Thursday, in honour of a retiring judge of the state judiciary. She stressed that the legal profession must remain a beacon of integrity, fairness, and justice, adding that the conduct of judicial officers and legal practitioners directly impacts the reputation of the judiciary and the trust citizens place in the justice system.

The Chief Judge noted that the judiciary plays a critical role in safeguarding democracy and the rule of law, and that this responsibility must be discharged with the highest level of professionalism and ethical conduct. She urged judges to remain impartial and independent in the discharge of their duties, warning against any form of compromise that could erode public trust.

Justice Dipeolu also advised lawyers to adhere to the code of professional conduct and to avoid sharp practices that could bring the profession into disrepute. She emphasised that lawyers are officers of the court and must act as gatekeepers of justice, ensuring that they do not mislead the court or engage in unethical behaviour.

The Chief Judge further called on the Nigerian Bar Association to strengthen its disciplinary mechanisms to ensure that erring lawyers are promptly sanctioned. She noted that the public’s perception of the legal profession is shaped by the conduct of individual practitioners, and that collective responsibility is required to maintain the integrity of the profession.

The retiring judge, whose name was not disclosed, was commended for his contributions to the judiciary and his commitment to upholding the rule of law. Justice Dipeolu described his retirement as a loss to the bench but expressed confidence that the foundation he had laid would inspire younger judges to uphold the highest standards of judicial conduct.

The event was attended by judges, lawyers, court officials, and family members, all of whom paid tribute to the retiring judge for his dedication and service to the judiciary.

As the Ogun State Judiciary continues to evolve, the Chief Judge’s call for integrity and ethical standards serves as a timely reminder of the values that must underpin the legal profession. For now, the message is clear: the integrity of the judiciary depends on the conduct of those who serve it.
