Ohanaeze hails ADC for halting Nigeria’s one-party slide.

The Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has commended the recent endorsement of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) by leaders of Nigeria’s opposition coalition, describing it as a critical intervention that has prevented the country from sliding into a dangerous one-party system.
According to Diaspora Digital Media (DDM), the coalition’s adoption of the ADC marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic evolution, effectively disrupting the growing political monopoly and reawakening genuine multiparty competition.
Ohanaeze stated that the emergence of the ADC as a consensus platform among opposition parties signals a turning point in Nigeria’s political history.
The group asserted that the development has neutralized the efforts of “crisis merchants” who were paid to destabilize opposition parties like the PDP, LP, SDP, and APGA.
According to them, those political actors have now lost their relevance, as their sponsors are increasingly uncertain about their future in the face of the ADC’s growing popularity.
In a joint press statement released on Friday by its factional Deputy President-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and Chief Thompson Ohia, Ohanaeze called on the Federal Government to abandon complacency and take urgent steps to revitalize Nigeria’s economy.
“The time has come for the government to awaken from its slumber and take decisive action to restore economic stability,” the statement reads.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is clearly on notice, it is time for him to pursue redemptive measures that will rejuvenate the economy and to assess whether the policies his administration has implemented so far have produced any meaningful outcomes for Nigerians.”
Ohanaeze argued that several ministers currently managing key sectors, such as the economy, security, agriculture, health, and rural development, have failed to deliver tangible results.
They said that with August 2025 approaching, marking two years since the inauguration of the President’s cabinet, the time for a thorough review is now.
The group, however, acknowledged improvements in road infrastructure and policies within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), crediting Ministers David Umahi and Nyesom Wike for the visible progress.
Nonetheless, they maintained that the country needs more than isolated achievements and called for a broader re-evaluation of leadership within the Federal Executive Council.
Ohanaeze urged President Tinubu to prioritize national interest over political patronage by appointing technocrats and economists to drive meaningful reform.
They warned that failure to reform would continue to erode public confidence in the administration and deepen the economic crisis.
“More importantly,” the group said, “the President must view the ADC’s growing political presence as a wake-up call and a rare opportunity to recalibrate his approach to governance.”
They described the opposition’s strength not as a threat but as a potential catalyst for more inclusive and responsive leadership.
Ohanaeze warned that the Nigerian people are more politically aware than ever and are no longer willing to tolerate neglect or broken promises.
The group also cautioned the public not to be swayed blindly, noting that many within the opposition coalition are complicit in Nigeria’s recent hardships.
They alleged that nearly 80% of the ADC coalition leaders are individuals with questionable pasts, many of whom previously benefited from the inefficiencies of the current system.
According to Ohanaeze, some of these leaders are more interested in personal ambition and political control than in genuine reform.
Despite this, the group maintained that the ADC coalition remains a better alternative to the political status quo.
They stated that the political landscape is shifting, and disturbing intelligence reports suggest that several state governors may soon defect from the APC.
These governors, according to the group, are in secret discussions with ADC operatives and may switch allegiance ahead of the 2027 elections.
Ohanaeze revealed that political pressure is mounting on some Northern governors from powerful traditional rulers and regional stakeholders.
They expressed concern that should President Tinubu attempt to replace Vice President Kashim Shettima with another Northern candidate in 2027, the political backlash could be severe.
They warned that such a move could ignite regional opposition that may sabotage Tinubu’s re-election efforts.
The group stressed the importance of maintaining internal party stability and avoiding decisions that could alienate key constituencies.
Ohanaeze concluded by urging the President to be honest with himself and Nigerians regarding the performance of his administration.
They insisted that a new course of action is urgently needed to salvage the economy and restore faith in leadership.
They called for collective responsibility, urging all Nigerians, regardless of party affiliation, to participate in the democratic process and demand accountability.
Ohanaeze affirmed its continued support for any alliance that upholds justice, transparency, and national unity.
They described the ADC as the most viable political alternative capable of challenging entrenched interests and returning power to the people.
